2014-3 – Theology and philosophy within predication :
from Thomas Aquinas to John Calvin
Presentation
The momentous occasion of the publication of Thomas Aquinas’ Sermones, in the edition undertaken by F. Louis Jacques Bataillon (†2009) and completed by the Leonine Commission [1], compelled the editorial committee of the Revue des Sciences philosophiques et théologiques to engage in a broad examination of the relationship between philosophy and theology in the very act of preaching, within today’s academic research.
This endeavour unfolded in three stages. The first, in September 2013, saw the Revue des Sciences publish a thematic issue entitled Théologie et philosophie en prédication : d’Origène à Thomas d’Aquin, which compiled the studies of nine specialists [2]. In December of that same year, an international colloquium, Théologie et philosophie en prédication : de Thomas d’Aquin à Jean Calvin, was organized by the Revue des Sciences in conjuction with the Leonine Commission, the Laboratoire d’Études sur les Monothéismes, the University Paris-Sorbonne and the University Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, offering a precise and multidisciplinary analysis of the corpus of Thomas Aquinas’ Sermones as well as expanding the discussion through the study of later periods and exploration of other cultural, confessional and religious spheres [3]. The final stage brings forth the publication of the Acts of this colloquium, which have been split into two volumes : whereas a volume of the collection « Bibliothèque thomiste » will host the contributions pertaining to St Thomas’ predication and to the edition of his Sermones [4], our present thematic issue of the Revue des Sciences, and second installment of a now diptych, presents the other contributions of the colloquium which have been honed and further developed by their authors. A novel and elucidating light is shed here on the speculative theological and philosophical contents of the varied and widespread forms of preaching in Europe, from the XIIIth to the XVIth centuries.
